There is an art to each artists studio. All artists are wildly different. Our space then, where we create, is uniquely geared toward our needs. The start of my studio, there wasn’t much space. I used to cram my large canvas and easel into the dining room, living room and when desperate, my bedroom. My studio used to be more of a mindset than a physical space. It was not until my brother moved out, my art and tools had a permanent place.
I have gratitude for my studio space. It is a 10X10 room with a door I can, and usually will, shut. I do not take it for granted b/c I know how hard it is to create pop up studios on a whim. Have a painting due next week? Better go grab my easel from the garage, paints from under the bed and so on and so forth.
Looking back, It is with these pop-up studios, that made me realize art making is not limited to a space, let alone a room. A studio can be taken with you!
That’s why, I like to put all my art making tools into strategically placed boxes. For example, Bookmaking? All in one box. Printmaking? All in a box. Jewelry making? Boxed up ready to go!
A studio in a box allows art making at the park, beach, mountain turn out readily available. I simply pick a box with the art tools I want, and I am limitless. I can create wherever I want to find my inspiration. I merely take my box and think outside of it.
